Margaret Glendening and MGmade

I met Margaret Glendening through the East Bay Modern quilt guild,  and am always enamored by the quilts that she brings in to show. Attention to detail, great color stories and fabric selection make her quilts stand out, along with how prolific she is.  So pleased with the quilt she made using Pop Rox and some Andover Fabrics textured solids, with a back as handsome as the front!

And because I’m such a fan, I’m also going to show you some shots of more of her quilts and don’t forget to check out her Etsy shop, MGmade especially if you want a well made affordable baby or lap quilt as a gift for someone!

Roderick Kiracofe and Ben Venom at Stitch Modern

Well, a few weeks back we were treated to am amazing slide show presentation by artist Ben Venom, who “juxtaposes traditional handmade crafts with extreme elements found on the fringes of society” and whose “work can be described as opposing forces colliding at lightening speed”. I have to quote his website since I cannot describe it sufficiently myself.  He is an amazing energetic presenter and we were all entranced and invigorated. Unfortunately I have no pictures!  So you are going to have to click on the image below to get to his website. This is something else.  Color me inspired.

After Ben, we changed courses and were treated to a viewing of a stream of quilts from Roderick Kiracofe’s collection while he discussed them.  I got a photos of a few of them to share with you.  Amazing. Most of them were from quilter unknown, from many a decade gone by. They were priceless and Roderick’s passion for his quilt finds was palpable, as was the audience’s response! Pretty exciting to meet him and pretty scary that I know now one could actually COLLECT quilts. Oh, no, hold me back!

Roderick Kiracofe is an art and quilt collector, accomplished author, curator, and consultant. A good summary of his books and accomplishments can be found HERE (why reinvent the wheel!)  Truly a joy to see some of his collection and hear the stories behind them. Several are going to be in his new book Unconventional and Unexpected: American Quilts Below the Radar, 1950-2000, Abrams, Autumn 2014.  Currently available by Roderick on Blurb are Quilts and Quilts 2, and on his Amazon page one can find a number his books including the amazing and well-known The American Quilt: A History of Cloth and Comfort 1750-1950 and Cloth & Comfort: Pieces of Women’s Lives from Their Quilts and Diaries.

Without further ado, take a gander at some of these finds of Rodney Kiracofe. Apologies for my less than stellar photography due to viewing circumstances, but still well worth a look I think.

Next up at The Plaid Portico will be curated coverage of the big show of the East bay Heritage Quilt Guild, and a project round-up for Pop Rox which is just starting to hit stores now.

And even more quilts from Stitch Modern

Ahh, so sad to say Stitch Modern ends tomorrow, and I feel like I should finish the coverage of the quilts at the show before we take it down. I was gallery sitting yesterday and there were many comments about how this show even surpassed the last. Good news about that is that people are coming back.  It is the third annual show.  One last workshop tomorrow before we take it down–a Round Robin Improv with Sherri Lynn Wood. Yes, I am going. Yes, I am excited. Yes, I will attempt to cover it here later this week. Ta ta for now!

Improvisational quilting with Sherri Lynn Wood

As part of the East Bay Modern Quilt Guild‘s show, Stitch Modern, they had a number of special events. One was a panel discussion on fabric design which I got to participate in which I enjoyed thoroughly, particularly meeting the other designers and sharing notes.  But I have to say the highlight of the whole show, AFTER seeing all the great quilts, was the talk I went to by Sherri Lynn Wood.

As you may know, I am now dipping my hand into quilting, just for the fun and art of it, and I really connect with many of the modern quilts I am seeing out there, and I really like the improvisational quilting style in particular.  I don’t really want to make quilts that look like someone else’s or follow a specific tradition or direction.  In my work, I design all the time for the commercial market, so when I sew I want to sew what I want to sew. Period. So hearing Sherri Lynn Woods speak about the improvisational process was just what I needed to really dig into the improv quilt I had started and make it happen. And I did finish it shortly after.  ….Ahem…. except the binding, but I will post when it is all finished.

Another very cool thing that Sherri talked about was Passage Quilts.   She works with people ” through collaboration, consultation and commission to make improvised quilts from the clothing and materials from everyday life”.  Love this concept. Hits me right in that spot. And she showed us one she made for her mother, Linda Susan Wood (1943-2003) which she describes as a “passage, bereavement, memorial quilt made from my mother’s casual clothes, Sunday dresses, bathing suit, robes and the dress she wore to my wedding”

Sherri is SUCH a good speaker, highly recommend if you get a chance. With a long resume of exhibitions, artist residencies and workshops, and with masters in both fine art and theology, she has a lot to share. Here are a few shots of the quilts she shared that day, but you might want to check out her site, daintytime.net for more!
