Quilter Spotlight: Darci Alexis

Darci Alexis has been active in the East Bay Modern Quilters, teaches, and is a new (and amazing) long arm quilter. A graphic designer and art director by trade, she sews, she pieces and she quilts. You can also find her on her site Darci Sews.

screen-shot-2017-02-24-at-5-44-58-pm

We all saw Darci take to longarming so easily and are pretty excited to have another modern longarmer in our midst. Though truth be told Darci traverses through modern, traditional and just about ever style seamlessly. We’ll show some extra close-ups of her quilting along with sharing some of her quilts.

Enjoy!

Spotlight: I Spy the Alphabet

Several members of the East Bay Modern Quilters have gotten in on the modern letter action using Terri Carpenter‘s I Spy the Alphabet paper piecing pattern to make projects with her ultra modern letters. I did too. So versatile. Take a look!

Capitola Quilter

I first met Karen Foster, THE Capitola Quilter, at the Sewing Summit in …2012? Wow, time flies. I remember her because she was from Capitola and I have always loved Capitola, a wonderful town by the sea, south of Santa Cruz, California. So fun to meet up with her again at QuiltCon 2015 after only seeing her on social media.

Founding member of Santa Cruz chapter of The Modern Quilt Guild and member of the Pajaro Valley Quilt Association, Karen is also one of the main cats in the Quilt Design a Day group and has a staggering number of designs under her belt. Known to frequent quilt retreats, she is an active organizer and participant of quilt challenges, swaps and bees… AND a prolific quilter, blogger and instagrammer.

But really it’s her passion for fabric and quilts and sewing that spur all of this, and she has so many wonderful projects and how to’s to share. I’ve had a super fun time meandering through her blog putting this together and highly recommend a follow on this one.

Yes, and she played with Luna Lounge and made not one quilt, but 2, both of which made it to Quilt Market at the Andover booth. I love what she did. Ripple Strudel in the grey color way, has a great tutorial. Then Dig Deep in the neutrals is based on the Stacked Bricks pattern, one of Pam Rocco’s Fibonacci series patterns for Quilter’s Newsletter and free online.

So we’ll show you shots of both of those, and then follow with many of her other wonderful quilts. Most images have links to more details and the tutorials. SO jealous she gets to take photos of her quilts by the ocean….clearly also an influence in her beautiful quilts!

Enjoy!

The Quilted Fox and Planetarius

Today we get to meet Terri Carpenter of The Quilted Fox.  An active member of the East Bay Modern Quilters, Terri is also the go to person for those in the know around here for quilting to fit with their modern pieced quilts.  And lucky for me, Terri designed an oh-so-cool quilt using Luna Lounge. It’s called Planetarius AND there is a marvelous tutorial. It had a fun time in the Andover Fabrics booth at Spring Quilt Market 2015. Speaking of tutorials, check out Terri’s tutorial for drawstring backpacks.

An initiator of round robin and charity quilts, Terri was also a key coordinator of the show “Amish:The Modern Muse” at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Her quilt ‘Flock of Starlings” (below)  won first place in the piecing, small, category at QuiltCon 2013, and her quilt “Squared Repeat” is published in the book “Amish Quilts, The Adventure Continues” by Lynn Coolish.  Currently doing “52 Weeks of Stitching” on her blog, she shares her sewing projects each week.

So that is a little bit about the humble, but pretty amazing and versatile Terri Carpenter of The Quilted Fox.  Oh, and shhh….word has it she will be teaching in the future, probably with her popular I Spy the Alphabet Quilt–pattern in progress! You know here at The Plaid Portico we like to share the stories about the people we meet along the way, and I just want to say it is just about my favorite thing. Color me inspired.

Now, let’s have a look at Planetarius and all of Terri’s quilts that we mentioned plus more!

Peppermint Pinwheels and The Carnival Quilt

Stacey Sharman of Peppermint Pinwheels did the most amazing Carnival Quilt with Pop Rox, though I am not surprised and you will see why when you see some of her other quilts here!

Founder of East Bay Modern Quilters (Formerly The East bay Modern Quilt Guild) and their annual show Stitch Modern, Stacey also teaches around Northern California and the San Francisco Bay area.  She can most often be found teaching at the fabulous A Verb for Keeping Warm, which is kind enough to host the last Tuesday of the month meetings of East Bay Modern Quilters.

She has a lovely and active Etsy shop Peppermint Pinwheels with baby play mats, digital patterns, baby blankets and more. And if you’re in the area, watch for her lecture and trunk show at The Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild April 18th meeting.

Hope you enjoy her Carnival Pop Rox quilt and views of some of her other yummy quilts!

Margaret Glendening and MGmade

I met Margaret Glendening through the East Bay Modern quilt guild,  and am always enamored by the quilts that she brings in to show. Attention to detail, great color stories and fabric selection make her quilts stand out, along with how prolific she is.  So pleased with the quilt she made using Pop Rox and some Andover Fabrics textured solids, with a back as handsome as the front!

And because I’m such a fan, I’m also going to show you some shots of more of her quilts and don’t forget to check out her Etsy shop, MGmade especially if you want a well made affordable baby or lap quilt as a gift for someone!

Quilting in the Garden 2014

What a scrumptious day at Alden Lane Nursery to see their annual “Quilting in The Garden” show.  Beautiful quilts hanging all over their vast property amongst the flowers and trees, all blowing in the wind!

First some shots of the whole scene and then we’ll zero in on a few quilts (only a fraction unfortunately!).  Photography a little challenging as one is looking up taking photos against a sunny sky, so we’ll show you what we can, and enjoy the dappled light. If you’re in the area, don’t miss this event next year!

Featured artists this year were local celebrities Diana McClun and Laura Nownes, and from Oregon, Jean Wells and the Quilt of Sisters.  There were also quilts by local quilters, some with booths. There certainly were beautiful quilts everywhere.  Kind of dreamy! Take a gander….

The “Shattered Quilt” Needle in a Hayes Stack

Love this quilt!  Called Shattered, Tiffany Hayes of Needle in a Hayes Stack designed this new pattern using Pop Rox and I couldn’t be more impressed!  Tiffany and I met at Fall Quilt Market and talked about working on a project together. I was so happy to get my hands on this quilt for a day last week to take a good close look after it was displayed at spring Quilt Market.  The design is so strong and works so well with Pop Rox. It’s different, and I think pretty versatile for lots of different kinds of fabric. AND the quilting is amazing, done by Darla Hall.

And after the pics of “Shattered” I picked some of Tiffany’s other patterns to show you.  She is a designer, quilter, lecturer and teacher, and she works with several fabric companies designing patterns using their fabric lines. Tiffany also did a nice blog post about her projects at spring Market here.  Just click on any picture to be taken right to the pattern!

AND she has a block of the month. Here is Asteria, and she also has designed a tool to go with this quilt and help with the blocks, called “The Goddess Tool” (I want one, even just for the name!)

Sew Sundays Baby Quilt

Well I have finished a small and supposedly simple baby quilt for some friends and a very special little one. I designed it in Adobe Illustrator as a sort of plaid using the Pop Rox fabrics with white to keep it modern and clean.  Why it wasn’t simple was because I was sewing it and quilting it all myself and am still finding my way. And this is my first non-improv piece (which made me want to do a crazy improv next) But in the end I let all the little errors fall as they may and it’s still a cute little quilt.

And it’s pretty easy to make one like this using any fabrics you want.  It’s 44×44 so you can use a backing selvedge to selvedge (I was dying to use the Pop Rox main border print so this quilt was an excuse to do that!).  And I used either 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 inches for each column on each side. Hmmm, let me see what order it was in.  The horizontal was 7,5,2,3,4,6,8,9 and the vertical was…6,5,2,3,4,7,8,9.  But you can do whatever you want. This would also be really fun using all prints or using different colors of solids.

What was really fun about this is that I got to use the whole collection on the white color way…er I actually didn’t use the pink/melon zig-zag, but it was originally going to be the border, but then I found out the baby in question was a boy…so I went all traditional and did blue. But you know I know his dad wears pink so I should have been braver.
