The Quilted Fox and Planetarius

Today we get to meet Terri Carpenter of The Quilted Fox. An active member of the East Bay Modern Quilters, Terri is also the go to person for those in the know around here for quilting to fit with their modern pieced quilts. And lucky for me, Terri designed an oh-so-cool quilt using Luna Lounge. It’s called Planetarius AND there is a marvelous tutorial. It had a fun time in the Andover Fabrics booth at Spring Quilt Market 2015. Speaking of tutorials, check out Terri’s tutorial for drawstring backpacks.

An initiator of round robin and charity quilts, Terri was also a key coordinator of the show “Amish:The Modern Muse” at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Her quilt ‘Flock of Starlings” (below) won first place in the piecing, small, category at QuiltCon 2013, and her quilt “Squared Repeat” is published in the book “Amish Quilts, The Adventure Continues” by Lynn Coolish. Currently doing “52 Weeks of Stitching” on her blog, she shares her sewing projects each week.

So that is a little bit about the humble, but pretty amazing and versatile Terri Carpenter of The Quilted Fox. Oh, and shhh….word has it she will be teaching in the future, probably with her popular I Spy the Alphabet Quilt–pattern in progress! You know here at The Plaid Portico we like to share the stories about the people we meet along the way, and I just want to say it is just about my favorite thing. Color me inspired.

Joe Cunningham at Stitch Modern

We were lucky enough to have Joe Cunningham speak as one of our Stitch Modern special events. Stitch Modern is the annual show of the East Bay Modern Quilters and we will be covering the entire exhibition in a week or so, so stay tuned for that.

Joe the Quilter came to sing to us, talk to us and joke with us- as is his way- and of course to show us his remarkable quilts and talk about quilting and art. He sews every bit of his large, mostly square quilts himself – some by hand, most by machine. Originally a musician, Joe has been a professional quilter for 35+ years. Having initially delved deeply into the history and traditions of quilts and techniques, his original quilts are unique and sought after. With eleven books under his belt, and quilts in permanent collection of museums, he is a popular lecturer and workshop teacher.

And before I forget, Joe Cunningham is doing a retreat with Patricia Belyea at St. Andrew’s Retreat House on the Hood Canal near Seattle, Washington in November. Session 1 is Sunday, November 8th to Friday, November 13th with the theme “Pattern as Metaphor”. Session 2 is Friday, November 13th to Wednesday, November 18th with the theme “Folk Ways”. The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters by Sherri Lynn Wood

Sherri Lynn Wood‘s new book, The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters is not like any other quilting or sewing book. I like the tagline as much as the book: “A Guide to Creating, Quilting and Living Courageously”. There are no specific projects shown step-by -step, long a formula in sewing and quilting books. That would not work here as it would take the improv out of improv! Sherri Lynn Wood‘s unique solution to this dilemma is a combination of a meditation on improv quilting, and a guidebook to the world of improv, through the use of “scores”.

The “scores” are a way for readers to create their own unique quilts “from a set of parameters as a guide” that act as a starting point. It doesn’t constrain you from being unique and improvisational, just sets you on a path and you can go where you want. Never fear, she does cover techniques, both improvisation and patchwork as well as finishing techniques, and she also explores aspects and moods of color in detail. What is quilting without color?

This book is thoroughly original in its format, tone and content. A perfect union to the subject matter of creating original improv work. The photography by Sara Remington is scrumptious.

Over 250 quilters signed on to test quilt the ten scores for the book. In the end only 22 quilts made it into the book though all of the quilts undoubtedly informed the final version of the book. And we can show you some of the other quilts here. And I am sure more will be popping up in modern quilt shows around the country as I have seen many already in the exhibitions at QuiltCon and other regional shows. QuiltCon 2015: Youth Quilts and Top Awards

Well, it has been a journey blogging the exhibitions at QuiltCon 2015. This is the last of the QuiltCon curated quilts here, though we still need to cover a few of the special exhibitions: The Quilts of Gee’s Bend, and Quilts of the 70’s from the Collection of Bill Volckening. But first we will take a break and do some book reviews and some smaller exhibitions.

Last but not least is the very inspiring youth quilt category. It is a small group of quilts, but there are a couple things to note. These young quilters are learning to use long arms at a very early age! Can you imagine what their quilting will look like in 20 years? Quilting traditions passed down from generation to generation is no more evident than in these quilts as each young person has been helped or instructed along the way by their mothers, aunts, and the community around them. Something new and something old.

The final special award winners are here, and though they have been all over social media, take one more look. I have to say that after seeing every quilt both in person and then here on my computer editing the photos and posting them in wordpress, it was a surprising pleasure to take a look at these again. They are indeed remarkable.

QuiltCon 2015: Pieced with Love

I love that the “modern quilting” movement is rich in the traditions of charity. Not only did QuiltCon 2015 prominently feature all the quilts from their charity quilt challenge, but they also choose to highlight an online charity bee with the exhibition Pieced with Love: The Quilts of do. Good Stitches.

From the Modern Quilt Guild: ” Fueled by social media and emerging technology, the legacy of compassion, generosity and good will lives through the time-honored tradition of making quilts for those in need. Rachel Hauser, of Stitched in Color is the founding force behind do. Good Stitches {a Charity Bee}. QuiltCon 2015: Michael Miller Spring Cotton Couture Fabric Challenge
