Some favorite booths from Quilt Market 2015

Yes, I am back from Quilt Market 2015 with a tons of pics. Most are of the exhibition, but before we get to those, I thought I would show you just a few shots of some of my favorite booths, mostly by some marvelous fabric designers.

In the next few weeks have several quilt exhibitions to cover so stay tuned…

Unconventional & Unexpected by Roderick Kiracofe

An advance copy of Roderick Kiracofe‘s new book is in my hands, and wow!  It is another must-have.  Unconventional and Unexpected: America Quilts Below the Radar 1950-2000, a substantial book at 225 pages, is full of photos of 150 “eccentric, maverick and extraordinary quilts made predominantly by anonymous quilters”.  Ok, I clearly should not have read the inside cover before doing this review because it just says it all so perfectly. These quilts “represent a twentieth century quilt movement that remains mostly undocumented–until now…..these..represent a freer, more casual, soulful yet bold aesthetic..”.

Roderick Kiracofe COLLECTS quilts. Yes, I continue to be jealous of this.  Collecting fabric is great, but collecting whole quilts, ..yum!  The introduction is its own soulful rendition of Roderick’s journey to quilt collector and quilt authority.  There are incredible essays by quilters, quilt historians and curators that form the structure of the chapters, all sharing in the joy and importance of this collection in different ways.

I am interested in modern quilting, whatever that is. If one is given to speculate about the origins of the current modern quilt movement, with established quilters saying that it is nothing new, then this book sheds some light on the subject. For me, it is an exploration, through actual quilts, of the influences that decidedly are part of what we call modern quilting today.

These are mostly everyday quilts, created for warmth and utility. But what results are quilts that are outside of the box, improvisational, expressing the artistry of the maker. Each makes an indelible mark. Looked at not through current trends, but through a historical lens and a curator’s eye, these mostly anonymous, unique, one-of-a-kind quilts share so much love and history.

Reading this book or just leafing through the pictures is a journey of discovery itself. Thank you for sharing Roderick Kiracofe. This book is an important work. Highly recommend. Surpassed my expectations.

“Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”, an exhibition at Quilt Market 2013 in Houston, show quilts designed by Kaffe Fassett and Liza Prior Lucy from their book Shots and Stripes. The exhibition was sponsored by Rowan for Westminster Lifestyle Fabrics. The quilts use interesting palettes in shot cottons and stripes.

Project Week!

OK, this week we are back to highlighting projects.  We have both Licorice Fizz projects AND Tokyo Rococo projects to get caught up on and I hope to tell you a bit about the people who have designed and/or made them.

But first, I will show you what I have been doing.  Not much! Having moved and renovated a new studio, sewing projects fell by the wayside.  Plus, I sew for fun only.  I have been inspired to start sewing again after I started designing fabric and getting to know some wonderful quilters, sewing pattern designers and sewists. I just had to get my hand back into it.  And I am extremely rusty, so whatever comes out comes out and in time the quality will improve.   I will sew a little with my own fabric, but also with my fabric stash. More on that later. (I have a great new storage place for my fabric stash!)

So here we have the last project I did with Tokyo Rococo, some placemats.  I think I would use a thinner batting next time, or even a thick stiff interfacing instead.  But it was a way to get my feet wet.  I actually just started cutting trapezoidal strips and sewing them together and pressing until I had shapes larger than a placemat and then trimmed them and sewed them together with a single piece print backing.  Yes, I got tangled up on the edges, and after resewing a couple sections, decided to keep them all rough and wabi sabi.  Plus it will be fun to compare it to projects I make in the future, in hopes of steady quality improvement. Have to start somewhere and if I get stuck in pursuing perfection, nothing will ever get done!

Next up, I am dying to make something using my raw silks from Asia.  I originally collected a ton of this fabric to make a large duvet cover using all squares.  But now I want to make an art quilt or large wall hanging.  I probably won’t add any prints, but want to add a little 3D element…stay tuned.  I have a few drawings for inspiration, not sure if I will plan it further before I start sewing. But looks at these colors…..

AND, I am reading Kaffe Fassetts autobiography.  It was passed on to me by Diana McClun who is working on an amazing book project of her own with Laura Nownes. I was lucky enough to see many of the new quilts going in there in person a couple weeks ago–absolutely BREATHTAKING.  They were floating around in my mind’s eye for days. More about that when the time comes. IMG_8467
