Pacific International Quilt Festival, Part 2

The next quilts we’ll cover as part of the Pacific International Quilt Festival exhibition are selections from the Traditional category. If you’re in to Modern don’t skip this as what is interesting is the modern overtones in many of the quilts. I am going to mix these up between the ones that seem a bit more modern and the amazing palettes, detailed quilting and phenomenal piecing workmanship of the more elaborate traditional quilts.

There were a lot more in this category in the show, these are merely ones that I gravitated to. Yes, I know, you are always at the mercy of my eye. Next up after this, in Part 3, we will do the Gee’s Bend Revisited portion of the exhibition.

Enjoy!

Pacific International Quilt Festival 2014 Part 1

Since I couldn’t make it to Quilt Market this fall, (packing up our kitchen in prep for a big renovation) I was glad to be able to cover the Pacific International Quilt festival at the Santa Clara Convention Center last weekend. It gave me my fix of looking at gorgeous quilts from around the world since I missed the exhibition at Quilt Market, which is absolutely my favorite part of market.

A bustling floor with booths of fabric, pattern, tools and all things sewing galore, the exhibition runs in and out through the whole space.  As usual, I go in and just look and shoot any quilt that looks interesting and appeals to me. We will have several posts as I took photos of almost 150 quilts so stay tuned!

The first set are selections from “4-Way Dialogue by ab-strakt-ed”, a retrospective of works created for a series of invitational, 4 person exhibits that were presented by this group over the past three years.  It features improvisationally pieced, abstract art quilts by Santa Barbara ab-strakt-ed artists Lou Ann Smith, Patty Six, Debra Blake, and Maren Johnson.

The “Shattered Quilt” Needle in a Hayes Stack

Love this quilt!  Called Shattered, Tiffany Hayes of Needle in a Hayes Stack designed this new pattern using Pop Rox and I couldn’t be more impressed!  Tiffany and I met at Fall Quilt Market and talked about working on a project together. I was so happy to get my hands on this quilt for a day last week to take a good close look after it was displayed at spring Quilt Market.  The design is so strong and works so well with Pop Rox. It’s different, and I think pretty versatile for lots of different kinds of fabric. AND the quilting is amazing, done by Darla Hall.

And after the pics of “Shattered” I picked some of Tiffany’s other patterns to show you.  She is a designer, quilter, lecturer and teacher, and she works with several fabric companies designing patterns using their fabric lines. Tiffany also did a nice blog post about her projects at spring Market here.  Just click on any picture to be taken right to the pattern!

AND she has a block of the month. Here is Asteria, and she also has designed a tool to go with this quilt and help with the blocks, called “The Goddess Tool” (I want one, even just for the name!)

The Beatle Bag and Happy Hippo from Fat Chick Quilts

Now it’s time to round up more Pop Rox projects, especially since many of them are currently on display at Quilt Market 2014 in Pittsburgh at the Andover Fabrics booth (photos coming!)  First off, let check in on the great projects Liz of Fat Chicks Quilts made using Pop Rox.  I always love everything she does!!

First off is the Beatle Bag by Abbey Lane Quilts.  A great travel bag (or sewing bag!) that can be used with a variety on inserts, and has such great options for details.

The Original Scrap-Bag™ in Pop Rox

I was pretty happy when Jamie Kalvestran sent me photos of Pop Rox on her popular Original Scrap-bag™ pattern.  I LOVE her bags.  Jamie is an experienced product designer as well as a sewing pattern designer and print pattern designer.  AND she blogs. There is her print & pattern design blog, A Pattern a Day, her sewing pattern blog, Scrap-bags, and Small Town Gardens. Her patterns can be found in independent quilt stores or you can always get a downloadable pdf through Jamie here.

Take a look at this Original Scrap-bag™ with Pop Rox, and of course I’ve picked more of her things to show you after that, including more bags and quilts, and a link to a pdf catalog to all the cool patterns for her Chickadee fabric line with Andover fabrics. Kind of to die for!

Sassafras Lane Designs

Last project in the Pop Rox round-up for this week is the Churndash Court quilt, a new pattern by Sassafras Lane Designs. I LOVE the modern clean lines. Actually you will find that in all the Sassafras Lane quilt designs.  They are clean and fresh, but with enough detail and complexity to make them rich and interesting and true to the quilting tradition but with a modern look. And they offer their patterns as pdf OR paper pattern right from their website. They also offer great free tutorials on things like installing zippers, foundation paper-piecing and installing grommets, AND they design bags as well as quilts.  They will be showing off Churndash Court and other new quilt ensigns at Quilt Market in Pittsburgh this year.

Let’s take a look at Churndash Court in Pop Rox as well as some of their other cool patterns!  P.S.  I like their photography settings…
